Wow

I have just learned that the word 'puther' is not a normal English word, but a piece of Yorkshire dialect. I used it in a fic, and the spellchecker didn't like it. Extensive googling revealed very few examples of the word online, which confused me, because I was hoping just to find out had misspelled it so badly the spell checker didn't understand. Nope. One site, only one that I have found, has record of it. The definition it gives is:

Puther: to make clouds of smoke or dust

So my dilemma is, how do I translate the word in my story, where I have written "A thick black smoke puthers from the candle."? I think I'll just leave it, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. None of the other words I can think of have exactly the same feeling, somehow.

Anyway, in a completely unrelated subject, new Red Dwarf is on tonight! I am so excited!
