I'm not really involved in the fandom, I just read the books. They are really good though, definately worth a look. The first couple are a bit too kid-ish, (but then they are kids books) but from the third I just couldn't stop reading.
Films are okay, but not as good as the books, and the longer the books are, because 4 onwards are pretty long, the more they have to miss out in the film. Not seen the latest flim yet, but thats what happened with the last one.
